Joycelyn Savage, one of R. Kelly’s girlfriends, ignored her mother’s pleas to talk outside a South Loop courthouse Thursday.
Jonjelyn Savage — who initially told a Sun-Times reporter she was Savage’s grandmother and declined to comment further — approached her daughter after she appeared in court on a domestic battery charge stemming from a fight between her and Azriel Clary, another woman romantically linked to Kelly.
As the younger Savage walked out of the courthouse at Harrison and Jefferson, her mother grabbed her by the shoulder and said “I need to talk to you” twice. Savage, who was on her phone, ignored her mother and quickly got into a car and drove off.
Savage pleaded not guilty earlier this month and is scheduled to appear in court next on Feb. 20.
Clary, who has since left Chicago, broadcast much of the incident to her Instagram account.
An assistant state’s attorney said she’d been in recent contact with Clary’s family, though Clary was not in court Thursday. Besides her mother, other members of Savage’s family were present as well.
Savage, 24, is originally from Georgia and her family has for years said they can’t get in touch with her.
Gerald Griggs, the attorney for Savage’s parents, confirmed to TMZ the woman who approached Savage was her mother.
In an interview with CBS’ Robin Roberts last year, Timothy and Jonjelyn Savage said they hadn’t seen their daughter in more than two years. They’ve repeatedly said Kelly has “brainwashed” her into staying with him.
Judge Megan Goldish approved a request to let Savage back into the Trump Tower condo — where she once lived with Clary, 22, and Kelly, 53 — to retrieve some of her belongings.
Kelly is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown while he faces a litany of criminal charges in four jurisdictions in three states.
