After coaching football in France, Frank Lautt returns to Arizona high school scene

Frank Lautt, who has been in France since October leading three club and semi-pro football teams, will return in mid-June to take over the Barry Goldwater High School (Phoenix) program.

Lautt said this was the first time he took up coaching in France, at three different levels. He was head football coach at Alhambra (Phoenix) for  21 years before stepping down in the spring of 2016.

Lautt, 57, had no trouble finding his way around France after teaching French in high school for 30 years and speaking the language fluently.

Lautt previously at Goldwater, so he is familiar with the school. He was an assistant at Alhambra after giving up the head coaching duties. Last year, he helped coach at Phoenix Carl Hayden.

“I felt it was right,” Lautt said about the Goldwater job that opened in April after Doug Provenzano was suddenly fired. “I don’t know too much about what happened over there, but I’m excited to get going. I feel like I have renewed energy.”

He said he already has assistants in place at Goldwater, who are leading the football players through conditioning.

In his last five years at Alhambra, the Lions went 30-20.
