AIZAWL: After being under strict lockdown for 72 days due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mizoram government began to relax a number of stringent guidelines from 4 am on Wednesday.
The relaxation of the curbs included opening of shops and plying of commercial vehicles in order to resume economic and commercial activities. However, educational institutions, public parks, picnic spots and places of worship remained closed and sports events continued to be prohibited.
The general public, especially the urban poor, had been suffering heavily due to the abrupt ceasure of economic activities owing to the stringent lockdown guidelines. A large number of teachers employed by private educational institutions lost their jobs, while people running restaurants went completely out of business. Those engaged in commercial transportation also incurred heavy losses as the lockdown wore on. Currently the state has a total of 20,075 infected people, while 16,106 have recovered, taking the recovery rate up to 80.23%.
