Oct. 06--It's taken almost 70 years, but the iconic South Side pizza joint Home Run Inn is finally bringing its buttery, thin-crust creations to Chicago's North Side.
The new Lakeview restaurant, which opens at 3 p.m. Oct. 15., takes over a 5,500-square-foot historic brick building at 3215 N. Sheffield Ave. In addition to a menu of decked-out pizzas (The 1947, for example, boasts sausage, caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms; Chicago's Best has sausage, pepperoni and smoked bacon), you'll find appetizers, salads, burgers and, new for the North Side location, a macaroni and cheese skillet.
A U-shaped bar features 16 beers on tap, plus cocktails and wines. Also available are a kids menu, gluten-free pizza, and carry-out and delivery.
Home Run Inn's reputation as a pizza powerhouse began in 1947 when Nick Perrino made a pizza with his mother-in-law, Mary Grittani, and put it on the menu of the Home Run Inn, then a Little Village tavern owned by the Grittanis. With the opening of the Lakeview restaurant, there are eight locations (Little Village, Garfield Ridge, Beverly/Morgan Park, Bolingbrook, Darien, Melrose Park, Hillside), plus the brand has a line of frozen pizzas.
The first 100 guests in line at the Lakeview location on opening day will receive a coupon for one free large two-topping pizza, valid Oct. 16 to Nov. 30. A percentage of proceeds from opening weekend sales will go to the Lakeview Pantry, a nonprofit food pantry and social services organization.
