CHICAGO The Cubs' bullpen imploded during a 8-4 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
After starter Kyle Hendricks departed the game following seven strong innings of work and a 2-2 tie, Carl Edwards Jr. and Joe Smith combined to give up a six-spot in the eighth to the Cards, highlighted by a grand slam from Randal Grichuk off Smith.
The loss snapped the Cubs' season-high 11-game winning streak and dropped them to 73-42 on the season.
Addison Russell provided most of the offense for the Cubs with a two-run home run in the second inning. Russell reached base all four times he batted (two walks).
In addition to Grichuk's blast, Brandon Moss and Jedd Gyorko homered for the Cardinals.
