African football star tags Glentoran in special Instagram post

African football star Afriyie Acquah hasn't forgotten the role Glentoran has played in his career.

Acquah's sporting odyssey has taken him from the streets of Ghana to East Belfast, and onto clubs including Palermo, Parma, Sampdoria, Torino, and Hoffenheim.

The Ghana international appears to be on the move again, set to sign for Lecce from Turkish outfit Malatyaspor in the January transfer window.

Acquah was living on the streets when the Glentoran Academy in Ghana took him under its wing.

The Glens Academy was created by Christopher Antoh Forsythe, a homeless boy from Ghana who was adopted by a Belfast school teacher.

Christopher later returned to the Ghanaian city of Sunyani to launch the academy, with the support of the Glentoran Community Trust.

Afriyie was one of the children who ended up sponsored by a Glentoran supporter in Belfast.

He arrived in East Belfast in 2007 as a then 15-year-old, as part of the Glens' Academy programme.

It has been quite a journey for Acquah, who has gone on to play at the Fifa World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

And he has never forgotten the input Glentoran had in his career.

On Thursday Acquah posted two photographs on Instagram of his time with the Glens.

With it he included the message: "Memories back then. God bless and protect us all."

The official Glentoran Insta account replied: "We've been following your career ever since. What a player and we hope to see you at the Oval again some day soon!"
