Africa Oyé organisers 'discourage' festival goers from bringing one summer item

Africa Oyé Festival will return to Sefton Park this weekend for its 31st event in the city.

This year's festival follows the 30th anniversary year in 2022, as one of Merseyside's most picturesque green spaces will once again be filled with the music and culture of Africa, the Caribbean and the Diaspora. It consists of two free days of live music, workshops, DJ stages, food stalls and a range of traders in the Oyé Village.

Among the acts performing at Sefton Park this weekend are Ghanian highlife stars FRA!, Cameroonian soloist Veeby, and guitarist, percussionist and balafón player, Kimi Djabaté.

Ahead of the festival, Africa Oyé organisers have ‘discouraged’ visitors from bringing along one item in particular. Festival goers have been told that taking disposable barbecues isn't encouraged at Sefton Park.

In a statement on the website, Africa Oyé organisers said: “We discourage the use of BBQs inside the festival site as they can potentially damage the grass if they’re not used or disposed of responsibly.”

Africa Oyé began more than three decades ago in 1992 as a series of gigs in the city centre. It is now one of the city's most beloved annual events, attracting artists and attendees from across the world.

The festival's commitment to being 'free and open to all' also means that the Access Tent, British Sign Language on-stage translators and Access Viewing Platform will also all return for this year's event. It will once again be filled with live music, DJs, dance, workshops, food stalls, traders and more.

It will be held on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 from 12.30pm to 9.30pm. Entry to the festival will be free for both days.
