More than 50 Australian Federal Police recruits have been "well and truly caned" over breaching social distancing rules in a late night party at the AFP college.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw told a Senate committee hearing that no recruits have been expelled over the incident in early April, when footage of an impromptu party at the college was shared on social media.

Mr Kershaw said 76 recruits had been investigated over the incident, 53 had been sanctioned and two had been issued with "show cause" notices.

"They've had well and truly the cane and beyond that, and they know our expectations and how disappointed we were," the AFP leader said.

The internal investigation into the incident has been closed, but Mr Kershaw said those involved had been summoned to his office to "answer a couple of questions I wanted to ask them, and they all had to respond to my office on top of that."
