AFP recruits under investigation after 'gathering' at college

Federal police are investigating a gathering of recruits at its college in Barton that may have breached COVID-19 social distancing restrictions on Friday evening.

An Australian Federal Police spokesperson confirmed police were aware of an "internal recruit gathering" held that night.

ACT Policing spoke to people involved on Friday evening.

"The matter has been handed to the AFP to investigate further and take any action deemed necessary," the spokesperson said.

The AFP confirmed the investigation after the ABC obtained video footage recorded by a neighbouring resident concerned the recruits were not following social distancing restrictions.

The federal police spokesperson said it was fully aware of social distancing requirements, and had briefed college recruits about them.

All residents of the AFP College were isolated as much as possible there and at designated training areas, and the AFP expected members to comply with health directions, its spokesperson said.

"Any breaches of the code of conduct will be dealt with in line with AFP professional standards framework. Any identified alleged breaches in behaviour by AFP recruits will be deemed totally unacceptable and will be subject to disciplinary actions," the spokesperson said.
