The Australian Federal Police has opened a cutting-edge forensic lab in Sydney to tackle ice trafficking.
Since the facility began operating last June, the AFP has conducted 424 examinations involving 138 investigations.
AFP’s national forensics manager Simon Walsh says the state-of-the-art facilities have allowed analysts to investigate a higher volume of more complex crimes.
“Having a larger, more modern and fit-for-purpose laboratory allows us to set a new benchmark with the capabilities we now have,” he told reporters on Thursday.
The forensics lab has been crucial in tracing the origins of overseas drugs, especially methamphetamines.
Assistant Commissioner Stephen Dametto says new technology allows the AFP to investigate the source of meth, how it was made, and the pathways it takes to reach Australian shores.
“When meth gets in, you do see a rise in crime and that is why we are so committed to preventing that harm,” he said.
“Meth destroys communities and we do not want to see mothers and fathers buying meth over milk.”
With 70 per cent of the AFP’s targets based overseas, the lab allows law enforcement to be more agile and innovative.
“The AFP has a long arm and we will reach out with that arm to disrupt you. We will target you, we will go, and we will get you,” Mr Dametto said.
