An Australian Federal Police officer has been suspended from duty after being charged with assault in a family violence incident.
The 42-year-old off-duty officer fronted ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning after an altercation with his partner at their home overnight.
The court was told the man had consumed between 15 to 20 standard drinks leading up to the incident and had a problem with alcohol.
In a statement of facts tendered to the court, it was alleged he grabbed the woman and pushed her head into the headboard of their bed, injuring her face.
It is also alleged he put her hands around her neck and that she was thrown from the bed onto the floor.
The prosecution opposed the man's application for bail citing concerns for the victim's safety.
But Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker granted bail with strict conditions, including a non-contact order.
The matter has been referred to AFP professional standards and the officer has been stood down while the matter is dealt with.
"An incident involving any AFP member is very concerning," ACT Chief Police Officer Justine Saunders said.
"It doesn't matter who you are, or what role you have in the community, any form of violence is not tolerated by ACT Policing."
He will reappear in court in July.
