Police officer fronts court with black eye after allegedly starting fight, forcing himself on woman

Ivan Kovacic fronted the ACT Magistrates Court with a black eye.

An Australian Federal Police (AFP) officer has been released on bail from a Canberra court after being charged with committing an act of indecency this weekend.

Ivan Bruno Kovacic, 50, appeared in ACT Magistrates Court with a black eye after he was arrested at his home in a city apartment block.

Documents tendered to the court show he is accused of committing an act of indecency on a woman he had invited to his apartment along with two of her male colleagues.

The three had met Mr Kovacic when they were sitting in the hot tub at the apartment block.

Police said the group was invited back to Mr Kovacic's home to try some craft beer.

The alleged victim told police she had become uncomfortable after a while, and was preparing to leave, when Mr Kovacic began dancing around and punching one of the men, including in the face.

It is alleged the man then punched Mr Kovacic back, knocking him to the floor.

Indecent act allegedly committed as woman cleaned blood from officer's face

The act of indecency is alleged to have happened when the woman was cleaning up the blood on Mr Kovacic's face in the bedroom of the unit.

Court documents allege Mr Kovacic forced the woman's hand onto his genital area.

Prosecutors opposed bail, citing concerns Mr Kovacic might approach the alleged victim and witnesses.

A police officer told the court the victim was very concerned.

"She's frightened about how it happened," she said.

"She's concerned about not being able to protect herself."

But Mr Kovacic's lawyer, Taden Kelliher, told the court that could be controlled with strict conditions.

Magistrate Margaret Hunter granted bail, banning Mr Kovacic from drinking alcohol, or from approaching the pool or hot tub in his building, as well as restrictions on him approaching anyone involved.

The AFP said it was assessing whether Mr Kovacic should be suspended.

Editor's Note: A day after Mr Kovacic's initial court appearance, the AFP confirmed he had been suspended from duty.
