'Afobe was offside' - Curtis Fleming questions Millwall winner after Bristol City lose

Marco Silva would not have been happy. Curtis Fleming questioned whether Benik Afobe was onside in the run-up to Millwall scoring the only goal of the game against Bristol City on Wednesday evening.

The Robins conceded a penalty when former Robin George Saville released fellow former Robin Afobe in on goal in the 63rd minute, for Rob Atkinson to mis-time his challenge on the striker and give away a spot-kick.

Jed Wallace made no mistake from the spot for his fourth goal of the campaign and the West Country men could not find a way past Bartosz Bialkowski though Andi Weimann and Chris Martin both had good sights of goal.

Following the game Fleming - standing in for the ill and absent Nigel Pearson - gave his verdict on the match and confirmed that the two of them had picked the team for the game between them.

"It was a very close game. I think it was an attritional Championship game, I think it was fine margins," explained Fleming after the game.

"We had a lot of possession and chances around the edge of the box to create a bit more but I don't think we did enough, which I've said to the guys and is probably something I think we have to look at.

"Yous will probably tell me but he looked a little offside for the goal. I don't know. I'm clutching at straws but he looked a little bit off.

"But I just think it's the fine margins of the defensive third and in the box - and the attacking. And we just didn't do enough tonight with that.

"But I can't question the endeavour or the graft that these guys are putting in. And we just get ready to go again on Saturday," he explained.

Millwall picked up their second win of the season and Gary Rowett was adamant that it was a penalty on Afobe.

Meanwhile Fleming explained that Pearson had been involved in the game.

"There was a couple of messages during the game as such," said the former right-back.

"Nigel is okay. The covid has hit him quite hard and hence he would have been here if he had any chance he would have been. He's not feeling great.

"That's what I said to the players after the game, 'you feel a bit hard on yourself or down, but there's someone lying in Bristol very, very ill. That's when you have a problem'.

"'So let's pick our chins up and we go again'," he added.
