AFL to review key call in Crows-Dees game

The AFL is set to review the contentious non-decision from umpires that overshadowed the final stages of Adelaide's shock one-point win over Melbourne.

The Crows produced the upset of the season at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, ending the Demons' undefeated start to 2021.

The visitors unsuccessfully appealed for a deliberate out-of-bounds free kick in their forward line, searching for what could have been a match-winning goal with half a minute remaining.

It came after under-pressure Adelaide youngster Nick Murray handballed towards the boundary line.

The play-on call will form part of Monday's end-of-round review of decisions from the AFL, which installed Michael Jennings as head umpiring coach on Thursday after Hayden Kennedy's mid-season resignation.

The result won't be altered, if there is an admission that umpires erred, but there should at least be some clarity regarding the much-debated rule.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin chose his words wisely on Saturday.

"It (deliberate out of bounds) is still one of those areas that we are still finding our way as a game," Goodwin said, refusing to be drawn further.

Crows counterpart Nicks admitted it was a heart-in-mouth moment.

"I believe there was someone nearby ... it's one of those hard ones, isn't it, to make a call on," Nicks said.

The AFL has made a point of publicly addressing decisive decisions from their whistleblowers after tight games this season.

The league admitted Zac Bailey should have been rewarded with a holding-the-ball free kick at the end of Brisbane's round-two defeat to Geelong.

The AFL conceded after round seven that Jeremy Cameron should have been awarded a mark in the forward line during the final seconds of the Cats' loss to Sydney.

Bailey and Cameron were both denied what could have been match-winning shots at goal.
