AFL to release Tasmania Carter report

Colin Carter's viability report into a stand-alone Tasmanian AFL side will be made public on Friday. (AAP)

An independent report into the viability of a Tasmanian AFL side is set to be made public by the league on Friday.

Former Geelong President and AFL Commissioner Colin Carter was tasked with reviewing the business case for the island state receiving the licence for a 19th club.

A decision on Tasmania's inclusion isn't expected to be put to a vote of club presidents until after the season, but the report should give a good indication of its chances.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has pushed hard for the report to be provided to the state government, saying he would release it publicly once it was handed over.

"We'll look to make public a release or announcement tomorrow," AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said on Thursday.

"That won't be any decisions. It'll be a commitment that we'll put out the Carter report ... with some covering information for us.

"But please don't expect a decision. It'll be giving you the information, which I think is a significant commitment."

There has been media speculation the report is favourable for the prospect of Tasmania's admission to the national competition.

Gutwein previously said the state government needed to see the review so it can progress talks to roll-over contracts with Hawthorn and North Melbourne to hold games in Tasmania beyond this year.

The deal with the two Melbourne-based sides expires at the end of the season.

Carter, who undertook a fact-finding trip to the Apple Isle in May, examined the business plan for a Tasmanian side which was presented by the state government to the AFL last year.

It found a plan that culminated in a side entering the AFL in 2025 stacked up financially.

Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane has spoken out against establishing a team in Tasmania, calling it "insanity" and saying the AFL is unable to afford a 19th team.
