AFL star Paddy Ryder catches alleged home intruder in citizen's arrest

Port Adelaide star Paddy Ryder has carried out a citizen's arrest after a group of intruders allegedly tried to break into his home, the football club has confirmed to the ABC.

A group of intruders tried to break into his Henley Beach home about 4:15am on Thursday.

The men fled in a car, which police said was stolen earlier in the night from a property in Largs Bay.

While Ryder's wife called police, the footballer followed the men in his car to West Lakes Boulevard, where the stolen car crashed.

Ryder then apprehended one 19-year-old man in a citizen's arrest, but two other people ran from the scene.

"This has obviously been a traumatic experience for Patrick and his family," Port Adelaide general manager of football Chris Davies said in a statement.

"The matter was reported to police at the time and the family and the football club have co-operated with efforts to find and apprehend the offenders involved."

Nobody in the Ryder family was injured during the incident, Mr Davies said.

A 19-year-old has been charged with offences including serious criminal trespass and theft, and has been refused police bail.

SA Police were still searching for two other men on Thursday night.
