GWS match-winner Toby Greene could soon have another date at the AFL tribunal after appearing to brush shoulders with AFL umpire Matt Stevic amid a heated on-field debate.
Greene attempted to brush off the incident that put him at risk of missing a semi-final against Geelong, while coach Leon Cameron argued "it wouldn't have been intentional".
The match review officer is certain to scrutinise every angle of the tape and potentially refer the matter to the tribunal after Greene helped the Giants prevail by one point in perhaps the greatest derby yet.
Greene, most likely querying a momentum-shifting decision to reverse a free kick late in the third quarter, made a beeline for Stevic.
The superstar pointed in Stevic's direction as he approached then seemingly made physical contact.
Stevic wasn't knocked off course but looked far from pleased, while the league generally takes a dim view of players making any form of contact with a whistleblower.
Equally, Greene was assessed for touching umpire Jacob Mollison earlier in the season but that was deemed to "not constitute a reportable offence".
"I don't know what it was. It was just in the moment and certainly would never touch him," Greene told Seven regarding his confrontation with Stevic.
"I was just talking to him about something in the game."
No modern-day player has been found guilty by the AFL's disciplinary process more than Greene, who has accumulated almost $30,000 in match-review fines.
Greene served a one-game suspension, which the club unsuccessfully appealed, in the penultimate round of this season.
Cameron, no doubt privately wondering why the small forward put himself in another potentially costly situation, played a straight bat publicly after Greene booted three goals.
"I just love the way he goes about things. I know he's a talked-about player but I'd like to really hone in on the positive stuff," Cameron said.
"His first three quarters were unbelievable in terms of the footy he played.
"Clearly it's a talking point but all I know is it wouldn't have been intentional."
Jesse Hogan also offered a character defence of Greene.
"It'll obviously be on every footy show under the sun for the next five days. I haven't actually seen it," Hogan said.
"I'm sure, knowing Toby, there's nothing in it. It's not really the type of person he is."
Greene has generally managed his white-line fever this season with relative grace, having earned praise for his leadership as stand-in skipper.
