AFL semi-finals confirmed as Geelong plays GWS, Brisbane Lions face Western Bulldogs

Only six teams remain in the hunt for the AFL premiership, with the Sydney Swans and Essendon exiting the finals at the first stage.

Minor premiers Melbourne has earned the week off ahead of the preliminary finals, as has Port Adelaide.

So who plays who in the semi-finals? 

Second semi-final: Cats vs Giants

Geelong and GWS will face off at Perth Stadium on Friday night, with the winner to play the Demons at the same venue on September 10.

The Cats were just short of claiming the minor premiership, but now face the prospect of departing the finals in straight sets, having lost their qualifying final against the Power on Friday night.

The Giants crept through to the semi-final stage via a pulsating one-point win over the Swans in Launceston on Saturday.

They could be without Toby Greene, after he was sent directly to the tribunal for making intentional contact with umpire Matt Stevic in the elimination final.

The Giants also face injury trouble — as they have for most of the season — with Tom Green (arm), Sam Reid (hamstring) and Isaac Cumming (ankle) all in doubt.

First semi-final: Lions vs Bulldogs

The Brisbane Lions will host the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba on Saturday, with the start time yet to be confirmed.

The victor will take on the Power at Adelaide Oval on September 11.

The Lions are desperate to keep their premiership dream alive, having lost to the Demons by 33 points in their qualifying final at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

The Lions had one win and one loss from their two home finals last season.

The Bulldogs are riding high on confidence after thumping Essendon by 49 points in their elimination final in Launceston on Sunday.

Lions defender Marcus Adams and Bulldogs tall Josh Schache both come up against their former clubs.

The two teams have not met since round four, when the Bulldogs emerged 19-point winners in Ballarat.

A packed house should be on hand at the Gabba, with crowd restrictions lifted in Queensland.
