AFL's Majak Daw in hospital after bridge incident

The North Melbourne Football Club has confirmed player Majak Daw is in hospital after an incident near Melbourne's Bolte Bridge overnight.

The AFL club said Daw is in a stable condition with very serious injures to his hips and pelvic region.

The club said it is providing support to him, his family and his teammates.

"The North Melbourne Football Club can confirm Majak Daw is recovering in hospital after an incident last night," it said in a statement.

"We understand the level of interest but ask the privacy of the player, his family, teammates and staff at the club be respected at this sensitive time."

Earlier today, Victoria Police confirmed a man was found with non-life-threatening injuries in the Yarra River last night.

"Police were called to reports a man had fallen from the Bolte Bridge, near Lorimer Street, about 11pm," a Victoria Police statement said.

"Emergency services attended and located a man in the Yarra River. The man, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

Daw moved with his family to Australia in 2003 and 10 years later became the first Sudanese-born player to play in the AFL when he made his debut with the Kangaroos.

Daw has played 50 games with the Kangaroos and kicked 40 goals.

The 27-year old enjoyed a breakout season in 2018, playing 18 matches primarily as a defender.
