Saints edge out Eagles for crucial win
St Kilda has stayed in the hunt for the finals with a dramatic eight-point win over West Coast at Docklands.
The Saints won the clearances and centre clearances, they out-tackled the Eagles and won contested possessions.
Yet somehow West Coast managed to make enough out of their opportunities to stay in the game before going down 15.13 (103) to 14.11 (95).
The visitors led by three points at quarter-time, then booted four straight goals from the 10-minute mark of the second term to break the game open, only for St Kilda to respond with goals from Jack Sinclair, soon-to-be retiree Nick Riewoldt and Blake Acres to bring the half-time margin back to three points again.
Neither team could break clear in a tight third quarter, but the Eagles kicked three goals in the first six minutes of the final term to grab a 14-point break.
It was not enough, however, as the Saints came back once more and finally sealed the game with a goal to Jack Billings in the final minute.
St Kilda is in 11th spot on 40 points, trailing eighth-placed Essendon on percentage.
West Coast is in ninth spot, but the Eagles have to play Carlton, the Crows and Giants in the final three rounds.
