Dangerfield reigns in another Cats-Hawks classic
A sensational third quarter by their Brownlow medallist sparked Geelong to a 13.10 (88) to 12.13 (85) win over Hawthorn.
In the latest chapter of their famous rivalry, Patrick Dangerfield was the star, kicking three goals in the third quarter with game still in the balance.
Dangerfield had been shifted into the forward 50 after injuring his foot early in the game and ended the afternoon with five goals, although it could have been more had he not missed two standard set shots from about 30 metres out.
One of those misses came with less than two minutes left in the game and gave Hawthorn a look at a miracle win.
It appeared the Cats would be on the wrong end of another 'Miracle on Grass' when milestone man Luke Hodge, celebrating his 300th game, slotted his only goal of the night with 18 seconds left.
Trailing by four points, a Tom Mitchell clearance from the centre bounce gave the Hawks a great chance and Jack Gunston found Isaac Smith inside 50, but Smith's decision to play on proved costly.
Rather than claim the mark and go back for a 50-metre set shot after the siren, Smith attempted a quick left-foot shot from 45 metres and hooked his attempt in remarkably similar fashion to his post-siren miss against the same team in last year's qualifying final.
