AFL's Port settle Indigenous artwork issue

Port Adelaide have confirmed a school student copied their AFL Indigenous jumper design from a South Australian artist.

Port unveiled their Indigenous jumper this week after a competition asking high school students to design the guernsey.

The winning entrant came from 17-year-old Ariarna Rigney, who said her design was inspired by designs she saw on social media.

But artist Elle Campbell says the design is "my exact painting" she posted on social media and put on display at an exhibition in May 2019.

Port chief executive Matthew Richardson said the club had confirmed the design was Campbell's.

"Clearly, no one intended for this to play out this way but we are now pleased that Ms Campbell will get the recognition she deserves," Richardson said in a statement.

Campbell on Friday met with Port officials and gave the club her blessing to wear the guernsey against Fremantle on May 30 at Adelaide Oval.

All AFL clubs will wear Indigenous-themed jumpers in Sir Doug Nicholls games in round 12 and 13 commencing on May 28.

"One thing that I want to stress is that I don't want people to hassle the student - she's young, she's made a mistake and owned it," Campbell said in a statement issued by Port.

"I ask people to consider her feelings because there's certainly no ill-feeling from me.

"Sir Doug Nicholls Round is important to me and my people and I know it means a lot to Port Adelaide.

"I don't want to take anything away from the club or the Indigenous players representing the club.

"I definitely want Port Adelaide to wear the guernsey with great pride."

Winning artist Rigney, from Murray Bridge, said at the launch of the jumper it took her two months to finish her painting.

"I was so excited when my design was picked," she said.

"Knowing that it's going to be worn by the Power has made me and my family really happy and really proud.

"This is a big accomplishment for me to have so many people see my artwork."
