Afghans fall to death after clinging to US Air Force plane as it attempts to take off from Kabul airport

Footage has shown Afghans clinging to a US Air Force plane as the evacuation of the country continues following the Taliban takeover.

People could be seen holding onto the side of a plane as it attempted to take off from Kabul Airport earlier today.

Thousands of Afghans have scrambled to the airport in the capital after the Taliban ousted President Ashraf Ghani 's government last night.

At least six people were spotted holding onto the side of the cargo aircraft as it kept moving down the runway.

According to reports five people have died amid the chaotic scenes at the airport.

Troops from the UK are racing against the clock to get remaining British nationals and their local allies out of the country following the dramatic fall of the government.

Lead elements of 16 Air Assault Brigade were working with US forces to secure Kabul airport to ensure flights can continue as Afghans and foreigners alike scramble to leave.

It comes as former national security adviser Lord Sedwill said the Taliban control of Afghanistan is a "humiliating moment for the West".

The crossbench peer and former cabinet secretary warned that "extremists everywhere will be emboldened", following the fall of the government.

The former Nato senior civilian representative in Afghanistan and ex-UK ambassador to Afghanistan told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We must be clear about this, this is a humiliating moment for the West.

"Afghan citizens are fearful, extremists everywhere will be emboldened.

"They've been quieter since the end of the Islamic State, they will be emboldened and of course our authoritarian opponents will undoubtedly be saying already that they have the strategic patience that we lack, so it's a very bad day."
