'Afghanistan is a humanitarian crisis - and the UK Government was asleep once again'

Grill them over crisis

The situation in Afghanistan is a humanitarian crisis and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab going on holiday shows the Government was asleep once again.

The way he had to hurry back is symbolic of how the UK, and the US, underestimated the Taliban by wrongly believing a 20-year mission achieved much more than it ever did.

Provincial capitals gave up often without a fight, entrenching the power of a resurgent medieval movement now entering Kabul.

When Parliament is recalled on Wednesday, Boris Johnson and Raab must explain why the fanatics regained control so swiftly.

The families of British service personnel who lost their lives, and the armed forces who survived deployments – including the physically and mentally wounded – are also entitled to ask if the pain was worth it.

Mr Johnson has questions to answer, the Mirror says (PA)

The Taliban taking back control is a damaging defeat for Britain, the US and Afghanistan’s current rulers.

It is vital to learn how and why it happened.

Clean air plea

Air pollution is a killer and otherwise healthy young people can have their lives destroyed by particles and gases spewed into the environment.

Cleaning the air we breathe should be a public health priority.

Improving the environment while protecting the economy and letting us do most of the things we enjoy requires a sound judgment too often lacking in the elite ruling the country.

Yet nobody should pretend that we can carry on as we are. Inhaling clean air is a basic human right. We must no longer tolerate firms and governments ignoring the problem.

Super season

The return of Premier League football, with stands full of fans, showed once again why it is watched around the world.

Spurs beating reigning champs Manchester City was also a reminder that no result can be taken for granted... so buckle your seat belt for another thrilling nine months.
