Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani expressed condolences over the death of Tetsu Nakamura, a Japanese doctor fatally shot in eastern Afghanistan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Ghani strongly condemned the attack, saying "such acts of terror, barbarity and cruelty can never deter the determination of the Afghan people and their international partners."
"People of Afghanistan will always remember his services," he said in the statement.
During a visit to Japan in October, Ghani said in an interview with The Japan News that Nakamura "has done amazing work in Afghanistan."
"He has brought us Japanese water management technology and adapted it to Afghanistan. He is literally making the desert blue," the president said, adding that "expansion of that with the non-governmental sector is extremely important."
