Afghan flag carried in show of solidarity at Paralympics' opening ceremony

The flag of Afghanistan was carried in the opening ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, in a show of solidarity with Afghan athletes who could not take part in the ceremony after the takeover by the Taliban.

The decision to bring in the Afghan flag was made by the International Paralympic Committee.

Two Afghans who were scheduled to compete in the Games -- a female taekwondo athlete and a male track and field athlete -- left Kabul for Australia on an Australian military aircraft, according to foreign media. Both are said to be aiming to participate in the Games in some form.
