'Afghan disaster and increased terror threat shows we can’t trust Tories with security'

This disaster, caused by a catastrophic foreign policy failure, will lead to an increased terror threat here at home.

Donald Trump ’s ludicrous Doha agreement states that the Taliban will “not allow al-Qaeda to use Afghanistan to threaten the US and its allies”.

But the Taliban has also pledged to respect women’s rights, while raping girls.

It offers amnesty to those who helped western forces, while hunting and killing them.

We can not trust the Taliban. Al-Qaeda is already in Afghanistan and we should expect it to grow and to operate there.

This perceived victory is likely to galvanise jihadi support and over the coming years intelligence services around the world will have to track extremists travelling to Afghanistan to conduct terrorist training.

This will be far from easy and even more difficult to prove, making it challenging to enforce anti-terror laws.

More trained jihadis on UK streets will put further stress on our already stretched police and security services.

Already, at any one time, there are around 800 separate operations going on.

The Government should have called for emergency NATO talks to hold Afghanistan together.

But their isolationist approach to foreign policy meant that was never going to happen.

This foreign policy failure abandons millions of innocent Afghans and also leaves us less secure at home.

We can’t trust the Tories with our security.
