AFCON organisers sent firm message as Liverpool set to lose Salah, Mane and Keita

The World Leagues Forum have sent an open letter to FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool are preparing to lose three players for the tournament which takes place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6.

Mohamed Salah is set to represent Egypt, while Sadio Mane has been called up by Senegal as has Naby Keita for Guinea.

CAF confirmed earlier this week that the tournament would go ahead, after their were growing fears and rumours that the competition would be postponed due to rising Covid-19 cases and concern for player welfare.

In the open letter, the World Leagues Forum has demanded that clubs will not release any of their players for the tournament before January 3.

The letter goes on to say that if countries in AFCON do not let players remain at their clubs until January 3, then any sanction imposed by FIFA will be “deemed abusive, null and void”.

Liverpool are due to take on Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on January 2, with it yet unclear if their trio will be able to take part.

FIFA regulations state that players who will take part in AFCON should be made available to their international teams from December 27 - 13 days before the tournament gets under way on January 9.

That would mean Mane, Salah and Keita would miss a crucial match against Leicester City on December 28, as well as Chelsea on January 2.

But Liverpool have yet to confirm if that will be the case and fans are hopeful that the key stars will play in those matches before departing for AFCON, which runs until February 6.

Reports emerged earlier in the week suggest Salah will be allowed to play against Chelsea before joining up with his Egyptian team-mates.
