AFC Wimbledon chief executive, fans and players sleeping rough to raise money for homeless

AFC Wimbledon chief executive Joe Palmer, Dons fans and some of the squad will be spending a night sleeping rough next week to help raise £20,000 for London’s homeless before Christmas.

Chief executive Palmer, Dons striker Ollie Palmer, defender Darius Charles and supporters will be sleeping outside the Cherry Red Records Stadium on November 27.

The aim is for their efforts to raise £20,000 for people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, across Wandsworth, Merton and Kingston.

Dons Local Action Group volunteers are also taking part in the event, with those taking part aiming to raise £250 each.

“It might not be the most comfortable night’s sleep but that’s the point really. I can’t imagine how horrendous life must be for people out on the streets, especially at this time of the year,” said striker Palmer.

“This is exactly the sort of cause every AFC Wimbledon player wants to help and it would mean so much if the fans came to join us.”

Dons Local Action have partnered with Tooting Community Kitchen, Faith In Action and Kingston Churches Action On Homelessness to make the Big Sleep Out happen and are hopeful of a good turnout.

“The evening will be a reality check for all of us but it is for an extremely worthwhile cause,” said Xavier Wiggins, co-founder of Dons Local Action.

“These organisations have collectively helped people to break the cycle of homelessness and they continue to provide much needed support to people who find themselves in this situation from within our community.”
