AFC North watch: The Ravens have an Earl Thomas problem

It appears the reigning AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens have themselves a growing issue with starting safety Earl Thomas. The seven-time Pro Bowler (including a nod in 2019) was sent home early on Friday after starting a fight with fellow safety Chuck Clark.

Numerous reports from Ravens camp on Saturday morning indicate there is no sign of Thomas at the team’s facility in Owings Mills, Maryland. It’s worth noting that Clark, the other man in the altercation, was an active participant.

Friday’s skirmish with Clark wasn’t Thomas’ first rodeo with causing a ruckus in Baltimore. He had issues in his first season with the Ravens a year ago.

Thomas was great in his first season with the Ravens a year ago. He registered just modest numbers relative to his career (49 tackles, 2 INTS) but was a tone-setting presence and firebrand leader of a young secondary. The Ravens do have some promising young talent in guys like DeShon Elliott and rookie Geno Stone, so it’s not absurd to think the Ravens would cut their losses on Thomas and save $10 million in guarantees for his conduct detrimental to the team.
