AFC North watch: Ravens send DT Michael Pierce home for being out of shape

The Baltimore Ravens might have a big problem with their defensive line. Talented tackle Michael Pierce was sent home from this week’s minicamp for being overweight and out of shape.

Pierce had not participated in any of the Ravens voluntary offseason workouts. He apparently wasn’t working out on his own very well, either.

According to Jamison Hensley of ESPN, Pierce was visibly out of shape.

Pierce, a restricted free agent, didn’t attend any offseason practices and looked much heavier than his listed playing weight of 340 pounds. Following the stretching portion of practice, Pierce left the field after speaking with coach John Harbaugh.

The Ravens coach did not mince words when asked about Pierce after the practice.

“He’s not ready to practice from a safety standpoint and for his own health,” Harbaugh said. “We recognize that and pulled him off.”

Harbaugh later added, “He’s not ready for this practice yet. I think you could probably tell.”

Pierce is a restricted free agent playing the 2019 season for his first chance at a big paycheck. He’s off to a rough start in that quest. This might also help explain the Ravens’ big interest in free agent Gerald McCoy, who wound up signing with the Carolina Panthers.
