AFC East standings after Week 9: First and last place aren’t separated by much

We’ve passed the halfway point in the 2021 season, and we’re starting to understand who the teams in the AFC East are.

The Buffalo Bills remain atop the division despite losing a horrific game to the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 9-6 on Sunday. Sean McDermott’s team was without some key pieces, and running back Zack Moss went down midgame to really hurt their chances. They still appear to be the best team in the division, but if these issues roll over to next week, the Bills may have a problem on their hands.

New England won their third-straight contest with a 24-6 victory over the Carolina Panthers that puts them just a half-game out of first in the division. The Patriots’ defense continued their dominance against Sam Darnold, forcing multiple turnovers and winning the game rather decisively. Running backs Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson both went down in the fourth quarter, so that is a situation to watch going forward.

The Jets had Week 9 off, giving them the opportunity to rest both Zach Wilson and Mike White who were injured in recent weeks.

In one of the truly ugliest football games that you’ll ever watch, Miami defeated Houston in a battle of 1-7 teams. There were nine turnovers between the clubs, with the Dolphins committing five of them and somehow still winning. Tua Tagovailoa didn’t start due to a small fracture in his left ring finger that could keep him out for multiple games. Jacoby Brissett got the call, as he started his fourth game of the season.

Week 10 AFC East matchups:

Miami Dolphins (2-7) vs. Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

Buffalo Bills (5-3) vs. New York Jets (2-6)

New England Patriots (5-4) vs. Cleveland Browns (5-4)
