AFC East coach explains why Mac Jones’ lack of athleticism is a ‘small issue’

Mac Jones doesn’t fit under the umbrella of a dual-threat quarterback.

The New England Patriots’ No. 15 overall pick did most of his damage through the air during his two seasons starting for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Jones threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns last season while having 35 rush attempts and 14 rushing yards — which of course is because of sacks.

He clearly wasn’t a threatening presence on the ground but was able to make up for it with his decision making and elite crew of players surrounding him on offense. An anonymous AFC East coach believes Jones will be just fine despite his lack of athleticism, according to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi.

Jones isn’t nearly as sluggish as Brady though — he runs a 3.8 40-yard dash compared to the 5.3 from the Patriots legend. If he sees any playing time this season, Jones will be behind one of the league’s best offensive lines and the security blanket of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith will be instrumental.

The Patriots haven’t had any athleticism from their signal-caller for two decades, so it’s difficult to imagine they can’t make things work with Jones.
