Aerospace manufacturer set to close plant with loss of 80 jobs

More than 80 jobs are to be lost after an aerospace manufacturer announced plans to close a factory in East Yorkshire.

Gardner Aerospace’s plant at Melton, near Hull, looks set to close, with the Covid-19 triggered “seismic economic downturn” blamed.

Bosses said the company was “dependent on the requirements of Airbus and a number of commercial aircraft platforms” citing Airbus’ 40 per cent cut in production in a letter to employees. 

The proposal is to phase the closure, starting this month and completing in September.

Gardner is headquartered in Derby, and also has plants in France, Poland, India and China.

A spokesperson said: “Due to the global seismic economic downturn as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak and the subsequent impact on the aerospace industry, Gardner Aerospace has seen a significant reduction in its future order book and demand.

“As a result the size and shape of Gardner will need to be realigned across the globe to the new forecast volumes.

“It is extremely regrettable that this situation has been reached and in these unprecedented times Gardner faces some very difficult decisions which will regrettably see the loss of employees roles and in the case of Hull the proposed closure of the site.”
