A WOMAN has been taken to hospital suffering exposure after an aerial rescue at a popular Newcastle beach in the early hours of Monday.
Emergency services were called into action about 4.30am after the woman, aged in her 30s, was found on a rock ledge at Susan Gilmore beach.
The Bar Beach operation involved the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
A spokesman said that the aircraft's critical care paramedic helped winch her to safety before treating her at the scene.
Paramedics then drove the woman to the Calvary Mater hospital, the spokesman said.
Separately, Lake Macquarie acting inspector Shane Briscoe said police had to wade into chest deep water at Swansea Heads around 6.50pm on Saturday to save a rock fisherman, 49.
The fisherman became stranded when the high tide meant he couldn't get to shore.
He wasn't wearing a life jacket and could not swim, police said.
