Aer Lingus to operate UK links hit by Stobart Air collapse

Irish airline Aer Lingus Regional is introducing a selection of new regional links with the UK following the collapse of Stobart Air.

The move follows Stobart's announcement last week that it was ceasing operations with immediate effect with the loss of 480 jobs.

Aer Lingus Regional has confirmed it will operate five out of 12 routes - alongside two that have been taken on by BA City Flyer.

Aer Lingus will continue to operate on Dublin-Edinburgh, Dublin-Manchester, Belfast City-Manchester, Belfast City-Birmingham and Belfast City-Edinburgh.

BA City Flyer will operate Belfast City-Exeter and Belfast City-Leeds Bradford.

Passengers due to travel on the Belfast City-East Midlands, Dublin-Glasgow and Dublin-Newquay routes are being offered alternative flights

Aer Lingus announced: "Alternative operations for the outstanding routes are still being determined.

“All impacted customers are being contacted directly and offered details of an alternative flight where feasible. All impacted customers also have the option of a full refund.”

Stobart Air managing director Andy Jolly told staff an attempt to acquire the carrier from owner Esken by Isle of Man-based firm Ettyl had fallen through.

A statement from Stobart Air said: “It is with great regret and sadness that Stobart Air can confirm that the Board is in the process of appointing a liquidator to the business and the airline is to cease operations with immediate effect."
