Aer Lingus blankets flying out to animal rescues instead of landfill

Aer Lingus have found a novel way to re-use the blankets they offer travellers on long-haul flights.

Instead of going to landfill, they’re now heading straight to animal rescue charities across the island of Ireland.

And they will be used for bedding for the pets who are awaiting new homes.

A pilot for Aer Lingus negotiated the deal with his bosses after homing a rescue dog and spotted the potential for the waste blankets.

And a spokeswoman for Lost and Found Pets North Down, said: “The blankets that would be used on transatlantic flights get cleaned about three times in their life cycle and then don’t get handed out to passengers anymore.

“Aer Lingus have agreed to donate all blankets that will be disposed of and they’ve agreed they can be used by any animal rescue groups or centres for clean bedding for animals or any use that can be thought of for the animals.

“And this will be an ongoing supply. We cannot thank everyone involved enough for this amazing gesture.”

This week the first set of blankets have been arriving in Northern Ireland for distribution and collection.

The spokeswoman said: “Priority is being given to smaller rescue groups who work on a voluntary basis and do not get paid for their love and dedication to the furbabes.”

To date, eight rescue and rehoming groups have signed up to accept the free blankets including Almost Home Animal Rescue NI, Sophie’s Dog Rescue, German Shepherd RRR, Rescue Cats NI, The Barn Animal Rescue, Lucy’s Trust, Paws and People and Dogs Trust Donegal.
