Advocate Basant Balaji appointed judge of Kerala high court

KOCHI: The Union government on Wednesday notified the appointment of advocate Basant Balaji as a judge of the Kerala high court.

The ministry of law and justice issued a notification announcing the President’s appointment of advocate Basant on Wednesday.

His appointment was recommended by the high court collegium in February this year and the Supreme Court collegium had forwarded the recommendation to the Union government on September 1st.

Basant was born on May 28, 1972 at Thiruvananthapuram. He had graduated in law from Kerala Law Academy in 1995 and had enrolled as an advocate on November 19, 1995. He then obtained a masters in Business Law from Kerala University and started practice under advocate GS Raghunath at Thiruvananthapuram district court. He thereafter shifted practice to the high court in 1998 under the same senior.

Advocate Basant had served as a senior government pleader from 2006 t0 2011, dealing cases related to land acquisition and Motor Vehicles Act. He was a standing counsel for Kerala Financial Corporation and was a panel advocate for Life Insurance Corporation of India.
