Advice for Marple residents as work to repair dam above Whaley Bridge goes on

Residents in Marple are being given advice about what to do in the event of flooding as work continues to repair the stricken dam above nearby Whaley Bridge.

The force says that there is the 'potential' for the situation at Toddbrook Reservoir to affect Marple, but is stressing that there are no plans to evacuate the town, and says advice is just being given out as a precaution.

GMP officers, firefighters and officers and soldiers from the British Army are there today, handing out leaflets containing details of what to do in case of emergency.

The Stockport council-produced factsheets contain information about what residents should do if an emergency does arise.

People living in and around Marple are being urged to 'familiarise themselves with the fact sheet, stay alert and observe flood levels near them'.

Officers will be going door to door delivering the factsheet, which includes useful phone numbers and contacts that residents will need should an emergency arise.

The force says it will continue to liase with the council, Derbyshire Police, and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service over the coming days, and has contingencies in place should the situation develop.

Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Nick Bailey, Strategic Lead for the partnership response, said: “I would like to thank colleagues, partners and volunteers who are supporting the response in Greater Manchester.

“We often see emergency responders react when a disaster has occurred. On this occasion, responders and their support teams are working 24/7 preparing for a potential incident which we all hope will not occur.

“This has seen responders cancel their plans at late notice, ensuring the preparations are as good as they can be, and helping keep residents in Stockport and Greater Manchester safe.”

The situation at the reservoir remains 'critical', despite significant progress in repairing it.

It could be up to seven days before residents, who were asked to leave Whaley Bridge for their own safety, could be allowed back into their homes.
