Adventurer Steve Backshall 'back up and fighting fit' after terrifying shark accident

Adventurer Steve Backshall has revealed he's fully recovered from a terrifying shark accident which left him with perforated eardrums.

The 48-year-old star was left with blood running out of his ears during on a night dive with whale sharks in the Indo Pacific last year.

Steve had been filming new documentary Shark with Steve Backshall when the shocking incident occurred and left him in 'agonising pain'.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Steve explained that he's now feeling much better and ready to take on 2022.

Asked if he's fully recovered, he said: "Yes, yeah I would say so. I think I'm back up and fighting fit and mostly trying to figure out how on earth to keep up with my three tiny kids!"

Steve and his wife Helen Glover are parents to son Logan and twins Kit and Willow, and he's 'so excited' about his kids coming to watch him in action this year.

Steve's 2022 tour Ocean kicks off in Edinburgh, Scotland, at the beginning of April and will see him bring marine wildlife to life on stage.

"This will be the first time that they actually get to see Daddy live on stage, which I am so excited about," Steve said of his children.

"It's gonna be amazing, I cannot wait, i absolutely cannot wait. I don't know how they're gonna act, they could be completely overwhelmed by it.

"A couple of times I've shown Logan kind of stuff from me on television and he's just burst into tears! He just doesn't know how to deal with it, so how he will cope with this, who knows!

"It's definitely a big leap, that is for sure. But I'm really hoping they find it really special," he added.

As well as his own tour, Steve is also hosting the UK premiere of Seven Worlds One Planet Live In Concert at London's O2 Arena on March 31.

The live concert will present a selection of the most spectacular scenes from the much-loved television series displayed on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen and is accompanied with music by Academy Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Jacob Shea, performed by the specially created Seven Worlds Symphony Orchestra & Choir, conducted by Matthew Freeman.

During the show the audience will be taken on a journey of discovery through the ‘seven worlds’ - from the colourful paradises of South America to Asia’s vast wilderness; from the unforgiving deep freeze of the Antarctic to the searing heat of Africa; from North America via Australia to wildlife closer to home in Europe.

"For someone who does the kind of wildlife programme-making that I do, it's very much how the other half lives," Steve said of the upcoming concert.

"To even step into those shoes for one night is a big opportunity for me. To do it at the O2 in front of 15,000 people is just epic, so yeah, I thought about it for about a millisecond before I said a definite yes!"
