Adults prefer driving to shops to avoid walking for 10 minutes, study finds

Most adults would prefer to drive 600 yards to the shops rather than walk, a shocking survey reveals.

They make at least seven needless car journeys a month to places within 10 minutes’ strolling distance, clocking up 276 unnecessary miles a year.

A third blame lack of time while a similar number cite tiredness.

A study by walking app WeWard established that the exact maximum most were prepared to walk was 587 yards (537 metres).

Among the 1,500 surveyed, almost half would never consider getting off public transport a stop early to stretch their legs.

Half knew they should be walking more and four in 10 failed to meet the 10,000 steps a day recommended to maintain good health.

A third revealed they would walk more if they had a friend to stride out with and a quarter confessed they simply lacked the motivation to put on their trainers and enjoy the fresh air.

Those who did walk said it gave them time to unwind, kept them active and was a free form of travel.

WeWard boss Yves Benchimol said: “It’s clear we are jumping in the car a little too easily, even though we acknowledge all the benefits that walking can offer. We want to get more people walking, even for just a few more steps each day.

“Hopefully, by spotlighting some of these needless car journeys, we can help change walking habits.”

Doctors recommend people between 19 and 64 should do some type of physical activity daily. Exercise just once or twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke.
