Adult pneumonia vaccine supplies 'limited due to unprecedented demand' - but one Manchester surgery has already run out

GPs say supplies of an adult pneumonia vaccine have completely run out with more not expected until next year.

The Department of Health and Social Care says supplies of the adult vaccine PPV23 (Pneumovax 23) are “limited due to unprecedented demand”.

But one GP surgery in Manchester has contacted patients to warn that they are “completely out of stock” with no new supplies due until January 21.

The PPV23 is used for the primary immunisation against pneumococcal infection.

It covers the 23 most common strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae that are responsible for a range of diseases including meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia.

The jab protects against pneumococcal pneumonia, but does not protect against the pneumonia caused by COVID-19.

It is recommended for those in clinical risk groups and is often administered by GPs to over-65s alongside the flu vaccine.

Only a single lifetime dose is recommended for most people.

The DfHSC say there is no issue with the supply of the PCV13 vaccine - which is used in infants and toddlers.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “We are aware that supplies of the adult vaccine PPV23 (Pneumovax 23) are limited due to unprecedented demand.

"We are working closely with suppliers and the healthcare system to ensure that patients who need the vaccine most can get it.

“We are continuing to do everything we can to help speed up future deliveries and Public Health England has issued comprehensive clinical guidance on how to prioritise those who should receive this vaccine.”

The government says there have been “intermittent supply issues” with PPV23 over the last three years due to manufacturing issues and the discontinuation of another PPV23 vaccine in the global market.

The manufacturing issues were resolved earlier this year, but, due to unprecedented increase in demand, supplies are limited until January 2021.
