Adrian Yanez keeps his promise, brings new UFC contract to father’s grave

One of the newest members of the UFC roster, Adrian Yanez is proving to be a man of his word.

Prior to his 39-second TKO victory over Brady Huang at Dana White’s Contender Series 28, Yanez (11-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) made a vow to bring his UFC contract to his father, Andy, who died in February 2016 after a battle with stage IV stomach cancer.

Earlier this week, Yanez followed through. With mixed emotions, he brought his paperwork to his dad’s resting place. Yanez credits his father with having kickstarted his journey in mixed martial arts and being a major supporter throughout his life.

“My father always kept his promises, so I had it instilled in my head to keep my word,” Yanez told MMA Junkie. “This was something that my dad knew I was working for, he knew how hard I have been working for it, and he showed up to every training session. My dad was a very big part of my journey, so I wanted to show my dad and say, ‘Pops, I did it.’ Even though I was sad he wasn’t (here) physically, I felt so happy that I was able to keep my promise to my dad.”

During DWCS 29 this past Tuesday, the promotion officially announced Yanez will make his UFC debut on Oct. 31 when he takes on Aaron Phillips (12-4 MMA, 0-3 UFC) in a bantamweight fight at a location to be determined later.
