Michael Owen has questioned Adrian's performances in training for Liverpool after Caoimhin Kelleher was selected in goal to face Ajax.
The 22-year-old made his Champions League debut for the Reds against Ajax and performed superbly, being preferred to Adrian after Alisson suffered a hamstring injury.
With Adrian usually considered Liverpool's second-choice goalkeeper, Owen says it has raised questions over the Spaniard's future.
Speaking on BT Sport, Owen backed Kelleher to perform well ahead of Adrian.
“It’s a big night for him," he said. "You’ve got to wonder what’s happened to Adrian for starters.
“He’s either played awfully in training or this kid is very good.
“I’ve watched him a couple of times, he’s decent. He’s good, he’s had a little bit of experience in the first-team before and he was also on the bench for the Champions League final against Spurs.
“So he’s seen those big occasions, he’s obviously got a big presence about him.”
Speaking about Kelleher's starting spot, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said he was confident in his decision and explained why Alisson was not available.
The manage said: "It’s not covid, that’s something we have to mention when it’s not the case - and it’s not the case.
“He told us after the last game that he felt his hamstring go in the 60th/70th minute.
"It’s a little one but enough for today and probably another week but we’ll have to wait.
“We had to make a decision, Caoimhin or Adrian, and Caoimhin, I’ve known him well for at least four years.
“He’s improving and improving and he’s a football playing goalkeeper. A good shot stopper, which is obviously the most important thing, and my job is to make decisions so I did that.”
