Adrian on standby for Liverpool return as Loris Karius hopes dashed

Adrian is on standby for only a second Liverpool outing in more than a year with second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher losing his battle to be fit.

Kelleher was absent from the bench on Sunday's 5-0 Premier League win at Manchester United after suffering a bout of illness.

The 22-year-old returned to team training this week but has not fully recovered from the issue that is now likely to keep him out of Wednesday's Carabao Cup fourth round tie at Preston North End.

And when asked about Kelleher's availability, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said on Tuesday: "Not sure.

"He trained with the team but it seems he had a little setback so he probably will not be involved.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has regularly rotated in the Carabao Cup, with Kelleher having saved a penalty when starting the 3-0 win at Norwich City in the previous round.

By contrast, Alisson Becker hasn't been in a single matchday squad for the competition since arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2018.

It means Adrian, who has fallen behind Kelleher in the goalkeeping pecking order, is poised to make his first appearance since the 2-0 Premier League win at Sheffield United in February - his only Reds outing in the last 12 months, although he has been on the bench seven times this season.

Loris Karius, who hasn't featured for Liverpool in more than three years, is unavailable as he continues to recover from the shoulder problem he suffered in August.

Marcelo Pitaluga has trained regularly with the first team this season and would likely be favourite to feature in the squad if required.

The 18-year-old Brazilian played in goal for the under-23s in their 2-2 Premier League 2 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Monday.
