Everybody loves Liverpool's Gini Wijnaldum but Adrian nightmare has been laid bare

You can't win them all. And at least Liverpool went down in something like a blaze of glory on Wednesday night.

A 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 second leg at Anfield ended their reign as European champions with a 4-2 aggregate loss.

Jurgen Klopp's side had, of course, edged ahead in the tie with goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino before a mistake from Adrian gifted Atletico an away goal and the tie was effectively over.

Yours truly was on ratings duty for the ECHO once again and considered Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain best on 9.

Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold scored 8 while, having had a chance to sleep on it, Wijnaldum deserves to be bumped up to an 8 having originally been awarded a 7.

Sorry about that, Gini.

All other Liverpool starters scored at least a 7, reflecting one of their best displays of the season - for 97 minutes, at least.

But Adrian had a bit of a nightmare in extra time, and scored only 5.

What everyone else said

Of course, other ratings are available. And the national media primarily highlighted the performance of two Liverpool players.

The Mirror loved Wijnaldum, making him the leading scorer with 9 as Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson and Firmino were given 8.

Blood Red: Liverpool Player Ratings - Liverpool 2-3 Atletico Madrid

The Mail do things by halves and put Robertson, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wijnaldum top with 8. Adrian registered 5.

The Daily Star loved Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, Firmino and Henderson, will all four scoring 8. Adrian was handed a 4.

The Independent were clearly watching a different game as Oxlade-Chamberlain and Salah registered only 6. Wijnaldum was top with 8, Adrian bottom with 5.

The Express thought Oxlade-Chamberlain was the leading performer with 9, while Adrian scored 5.

Finally, the number-crunchers at WhoScored.com calculated Wijnaldum was best with 8.97 ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain on 8.02. Lowest was Adrian with 4.85.
