Adrian Mutu still haunted by Rangers moment as he recalls bitter UEFA Cup final regret

Former Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has told of the despair that haunts him to this day over his miss against Rangers in the dying embers of their UEFA Cup semi-final clash.

The Romanian hitman played for Fiorentina in 2008 when they came up against Walter Smith 's side in the last four of the competition and the Italians went out on penalties after two goalless draws.

Mutu is the joint all-time top scorer of Romania, alongside Gheorghe Hagi and is now the manager of his nation's Under 21s side.

But he admitted he's still gutted at losing out to the Govan side 12 years ago in Florence, with Rangers reaching the Final in Manchester only to lose 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg.

Mutu said: "If I could replay one single game from the whole of my career, it would be the second leg of the semi-final against Rangers in the UEFA Cup.

"In the final moments of the game, I had a great chance to score with a header, but I put too much power on it and the ball didn't go in.

"We ended up losing on penalties and I often think of that moment.

"I am convinced we would have won the UEFA Cup if we had got to the Final that year.

"Maybe one day I can make up for it because it would be my dream to manage Fiorentina in the future."
