Adrian Mullen 'didn't register' bizarre Greg Kennedy incident during Kilkenny-Dublin

Adrian Mullen says the bizarre Greg Kennedy incident “didn’t register” with him when it occurred during last Saturday’s Kilkenny-Dublin game.

The Ballyhale Shamrocks starlet was making his Championship debut for Kilkenny in the game, which was overshadowed by Kennedy, the Dublin team runner and selector, intercepting a short free that TJ Reid attempted to play to Billy Ryan.

It is believed that the CCCC has proposed a four-week suspension for Kennedy as a result wich, if it sticks, will see him off the sideline for Dublin’s meeting with Wexford on Sunday and the clash with Carlow on June 2.

Speaking at the launch of the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland under-20 Championship, Mullen said: “At the time, it didn't really register with me at all. You were just kind of caught up in the play.

“I heard the crowd roaring but I didn't really know what they were roaring at. These things happen in the heat of the moment.

“To be honest I haven't thought too much about it. You just take it as it comes. There's probably someone to look after all of that who is higher up.

Referees chief Willie Barrett ensures zero tolerance for head high challenges

“We're only players, we just go out and play hurling and don't want to get distracted by any of that.”

Mullen’s debut was the latest development in a whirlwind few months for the youngster, who starred in Ballyhale’s All-Ireland club success in March.

He continued: “Down in Ballyhale you have so many leaders and you look up to them and copy what they’re doing and you won’t go too far wrong copying TJ, Michael and Colin and Joey and you have Henry as well and he gave us a lot of constructive criticism.

“At the start it is a bit overwhelming but when you start to play and train with them and picking around you see they are all sound fellas and you get on so well with them and you create that bond with them and any good teams have to create that bond with them.

“Any good team has that bond and we had with Ballyhale and they’d be so good to the younger lads they’d drive them on they are good like that.”
