Adrian Lam's captaincy conundrum as Wigan head coach praises Thomas Leuluai

Wigan Warriors head coach Adrian Lam says he has yet to make a final call on who will become the club's next captain.

For the first time in 15 years, the Warriors are in the process of selecting a new captain after Sean O'Loughlin called time on his legendary career.

It goes without saying that the successful candidate will have big shoes to fill.

But Lam's current issue is who replaces O'Loughlin, rather than how they replace him.

From the outside looking in there are a number of candidates; Liam Farrell, Thomas Leuluai, John Bateman and Sam Powell are among those who stand out.

As of now, no decision has been made.

"It's a process the club is going through at the moment," Lam said.

"It's important we get that right, we'll know before round one but it's an exciting time. Sean O'Loughlin has been the leader of this club for a very long time and done an amazing job.

"Our leader moving forward will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders but one great thing I've learnt about this club and this team since my arrival is that we've got many really good leaders right across the board.

"They're leading the way at the moment, I know they feel strongly about starting the season strongly, I'm sure we'll make that decision through the club's processes in the next couple of weeks."

O'Loughlin's absence from the field is practically irreplaceable, though his presence as part of the coaching staff will help.

But the club's ability to convince Thomas Leuluai to play on for another year will retain a crucial leadership figure for the group in 2021.

"It was really important for the group," Lam said.

"Tommy is one of the smartest players I've coached in my time at any club and I've been doing this for a long time. Not only is he a smart player but he's a great leader, they look up to him and with his voice still at training is great."
