Adrian Lam provides Wigan Warriors recruitment update

Adrian Lam is willing to play the waiting game as the club considers its options in the transfer market.

The unexpected departure of George Burgess has seen the England forward head a trimming of Lam's squad throughout the off-season.

The likes of Joe Greenwood, Ben Flower and Chris Hankinson have all moved on and have followed the likes of Sean O'Loughlin, Joe Burgess and Jack Wells out of the club.

Meanwhile, youngsters Josh Woods and Jake Shorrocks have left for Newcastle Thunder, Romain Navarrete has completed a permanent move away with London Broncos while youngster Harry Rushton has joined Canberra Raiders.

The club had always planned to reduce the size of its squad ahead of the new campaign, though Burgess' exit, a result of upcoming hip surgery, was not previously envisaged.

But Lam, who will add John Bateman and Jai Field to his squad for the 2021 campaign, says there is no rush to replace the forward, with the club instead happy to wait and assess their options.

"I think its something Kris Radlinski and also our chairman will speak about over the next couple of weeks.

"Clearly there's some freedom there for us but we'll look at our options during the first half of the year. There's no rush, we've some young ones there we want to develop and it's a long season.

"When I looked at our front-rowers last year, a lot played around the same amount of games. Ethan Havard was the in-form front-rower before he rolled his ankle and missed the Grand Final. There's Joe Bullock, Liam Byrne and Joe Shorrocks. Mitch Clark is another and we have young Ben Kilner coming through. There's Tony Clubb, one of the elder statesman, and also Brad Singleton and Ollie Partington. You can see there that we aren't short of options."

In recent years, the club has made a habit of recruiting successfully mid-season. In 2019 the Warriors secured the signing of Bevan French, who was one of the competition's standout performers last year, while Brad Singleton was a revelation after he secured a move from Toronto Wolfpack.

With quota spots at their disposal and players from the NRL often becoming available during the year, Lam believes there is more than enough justification for being patient.

"It's the same every year to be honest," he pointed out.

"We're aware of that, we benefitted last year when we picked up Brad Singleton in the last six weeks of the comp. We'll keep our ears and eyes open. Our priority is our young ones who have been supportive through the season, it's important that they're ready to go and we get them to where they need to be.

"But we're always looking. The timing of Geroge is not great but that's OK. We'll consider our next options. All clubs keep eyes and ears open to see what unfolds and we're no different."
